Michelle Ayers founded EMMA, LLC in 2014 when she had the exact conversation with her parents described in The Situation on our home page. Faced with Dad’s rapid decline into dementia which forced him into a nursing home situation for an indefinite period of time--with fees accruing at an astonishing $10,000 per month—Michelle started down the barrier-strewn road of completing the Medicaid application on her father’s behalf. She spent an entire day at the Camden County, New Jersey Medicaid office, only to learn that the Five-Year 'look back' Application requires the gathering of a dauntingly long list of official documents before it can be considered. Fortunately, Michelle’s career research skills amassed as a Law Librarian for large Philadelphia PA law firms and the Third Circuit Federal Court proved invaluable in locating the needed documents in record time. Time spent visiting Dad and talking with other adult children in similar circumstances revealed many were unable to complete this difficult task, not the least of which was not being able to spare the time off from their own jobs---and Michelle realized that she could use her skills to help other families in Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties, New Jersey during this most stressful time.
